Kaurna Language in the Classroom

We’re an Aboriginal-managed team delivering training in Kaurna language use in school settings, working in collaboration with Kaurna community and Elders to ensure authentic, accountable language education.

Thanks to both presenters, I certainly left the day with a significantly increased understanding of Kaurna language. Both presenters scaffolded the learning appropriately, provided explanatory notes and supporting resources, encouraged participant practice, celebrated success and provided individual support when needed. From that perspective, I couldn’t have asked for anything  more.

Maybe you’re an Aboriginal educator interested in promoting more language in your classroom?

Join the award-winning Kira Yaltu Bain and Dr Labhaoise Upton for a workshop that will equip you with the fundamentals of authentic, respectful delivery and the building blocks of a programme that will move beyond simple greetings and songs, incorporating culture, curriculum and resources. Renowned community leader Uncle Moogy Sumner brings his wisdom and expertise to support your exploration of the themes.

With 37 years’ teaching experience between them at primary and tertiary level, and language experience in teaching contexts, curriculum development and teacher coaching, these accredited Kaurna specialists offer a day of relaxed professional learning that reaches into the heart of language education both on a relational and curriculum level.

Meet the presenters

Kira Yaltu Bain is a Ngarrindjeri woman who was born on Kaurna Yarta. Kira has been learning Kaurna since she was 13 years old and has since been teaching Kaurna in a variety of organisations and schools. She has been involved in resource development and consultation, assisting many organisations with increasing their use of Kaurna language whilst on Kaurna Yarta. Kira aims to raise her children as multilingual, immersing them in as much of their languages and cultures as possible to ensure they have a strong sense of identity and connection. Kira wants to give her children the opportunities that her family didn’t have, the right to speak their language and practice their culture and with the help of her Elders and community, she is able to do that.
Dr Labhaoise Upton is an Adelaide teacher of Irish descent. She has spent the last nine years learning Kaurna language formally and informally and holds permission to teach Kaurna from language custodians. She has written and run R-10 programmes in schools and teaches Aboriginal Education at uniSA. Most recently Labhaoise was seconded by DfE to co-write a Kaurna language Framework and Scope and Sequence, published in 2025. She project manages resources with her Kaurna teachers, features in the DfE stretch RAP and an ACARA Illustration of Practice, and is passionate about the establishment of a full published language curriculum and associated teacher training.
